Pro bono referral

The term “pro bono” means free legal services that are provided by a solicitor voluntarily. It comes from Latin, as many legal terms do.

LawRight is an organisation that helps members of the public access pro bono legal advice, by connecting them with solicitors who do pro bono work.

The service aims to help people in the community who might find it difficult to get legal advice because:

  • can’t afford a solicitor
  • can’t receive legal aid from government or community legal organisations
  • have a legal matter that is in the public interest (e.g. cases that affect a lot of people, raise matters of concern to the public, or impact vulnerable or disadvantaged people), and
  • have a civil legal matter (not family or criminal law).

What type of legal issues can solicitors provide pro bono legal advice on?

LawRight mainly assists people who have a civil legal matter.

They do not provide pro bono assistance for issues in:

  • Family law
  • Criminal law
  • Building and construction disputes
  • Complex commercial disputes
